The Case for Human Approval in AI Automation

The promise of AI automation is that it handles work without human intervention. That's the goal. But getting there responsibly requires something that feels counterintuitive: deliberately building in human checkpoints for the actions that matter most.

This isn't a limitation of AI. It's how every high-stakes system is designed. Code doesn't go to production without review. Payments above a threshold require sign-off. Contracts need approval. The question for AI automation isn't whether to have approvals — it's which actions need them and how to make them fast.

Not every action is equal

Fetching data is low risk. Sending an email to a customer is higher risk. Processing a refund is higher still. Deleting records or modifying billing information sits at the top.

When you build AI automation without a clear model of which actions are which, you end up with one of two failure modes: either everything requires approval (which defeats the purpose) or nothing does (which creates incidents). The goal is a calibrated middle ground — automate what's safe, checkpoint what isn't.

What an approval flow looks like in practice

When an AI agent generates a plan that includes a high-risk action, the system pauses and sends the plan to a designated approver — a manager, a team lead, or a specific role with the authority to sign off. The approver sees exactly what the agent wants to do, in readable form, with all the context they need to make a decision.

They can approve, reject, or modify. If they approve, execution continues. If they reject, the agent is informed and can adjust the plan. The whole exchange is logged.

Approvals build trust

One of the biggest barriers to AI adoption inside organizations is trust. Teams are reluctant to let AI touch real systems because they can't see what it's doing or stop it if something goes wrong. Approval flows directly address this.

When people know that certain actions will always surface for review, they become more comfortable letting AI handle the rest autonomously. You build trust incrementally — automate the easy stuff first, add approvals for the sensitive parts, and expand autonomy over time as confidence grows.

The long-term goal is fewer approvals, not more

Approvals are a starting point, not a permanent feature. As you observe which plans consistently get approved without issues, you can move those actions into the fully automated tier. As you observe which plans frequently get rejected or modified, you improve the model's prompts and constraints.

Over time, AI automation earns more autonomy by demonstrating reliability. The approval layer isn't a bottleneck — it's the feedback mechanism that makes the system trustworthy enough to eventually not need it.
